It's official! The results are back and I can safely say that I'm 15 years cancer-free! 🎉
Even though I'm now long past my prolonged remission after having undergone four rounds of chemotherapy for stage-four testicular cancer (yes, it spread... a lot!), that doesn't mean it's truly over. Cancer has this horrible habit of returning, so it pays to be vigilant.
During my immediate post-chemo period, what a former work colleague of mine who had undergone chemotherapy for breast cancer advised me to do was that in post-remission I have annual tumour marker tests to make sure that the cancer hasn't decided to make a comeback. Now this is something you have to organise yourself with your GP. So I've been doing this diligently every year not only for my own peace of mind but also that of my loved ones and friends.
This means I can continue to do what I love doing – translating from Southern Slavic languages into English, making English-language copy and content perfect for the Australian market, and editing Balkan-related texts.
The sad story is that my well-intentioned work colleague did not follow her own advice. Her breast cancer did come back but was detected too late and she died aged 44. Aisleyne, you're sorely missed!
⚠️ So please, for all you post-cancer people, keep checking and do your annual tumour marker tests.
✋ And cancer, don't you mess with me again!
